Codex Control setup and support

Install Codex Control from Elgato Marketplace. This is an independent integration, not an official OpenAI or Elgato product.

Requirements

Requires macOS 13 or later, Stream Deck 7.1 or later, and a running, signed-in Codex Desktop app with its bundled CLI. Available models, effort levels and Fast support depend on your account. Windows and dial controls are not supported. App updates may affect compatibility; available options can vary by plugin version.

Install and configure

  1. Install the plugin through its Marketplace listing. If you already have a plugin installer, double-click the .streamDeckPlugin file to install or update.
  2. On a 15-key Stream Deck, plugin version 1.5.5 and later includes the free, editable Codex Control Starter profile. If Stream Deck offers it, install it and select it from the profile menu. It does not automatically replace or activate your current profile. On earlier versions or other devices, drag Preset, Model, Effort, Fast Mode, Task or Status onto keys yourself.
  3. The starter's middle row chooses GPT-6 Luna, Sol, or Astra and includes an Astra MAX preset. The bottom row chooses Medium, High, XHigh, or MAX effort. The top row has task navigation, Fast toggle, and status refresh. Model, Effort, and Fast change only their own settings. A preset changes model and effort together when an intermediate combination is unsupported.
  4. For Current window, allow Stream Deck in macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, keep Codex's Command-Option-L Copy deeplink shortcut, and bring the intended Codex task to the front. Alternatively, choose Selected on Deck or a fixed local task for keys you configure yourself.
  5. Press a physical Stream Deck key to apply the action. Installing a profile or editing a button saves its configuration; it does not apply it to a Codex task.

Model, effort and Fast changes apply to the next turn, not a response already running. The plugin does not submit prompts. A task must be open and reachable. Physical controls across all inactive tasks have not been comprehensively verified.

Keys still use an older installation

Installing or updating Codex Control preserves your existing profiles, including a starter profile you previously installed and edited. It does not reassign keys from a development build or another plugin identifier. Those keys can keep running an older installation even when the public plugin is up to date.

Add replacement actions from the current Codex Control group in Stream Deck, then configure their model, effort, Fast mode and task target. The public plugin identifier is com.oddfin.codex-control; the website's move to Oddfini does not change it. To use a newer starter model, edit the saved Model key as described below.

A newer model is missing

Saved Model and Preset keys keep their exact model choice; they never switch automatically to a newly released model. Select the key in Stream Deck, refresh its model and task list, then choose a model available to your signed-in Codex account. If one Model or Effort key reports an unsupported intermediate combination, use a Preset key to change both together. Current-window status is read when pressed; active indicators expire after a short interval.

For GPT-6.1 Sol, choose its exact model ID in the refreshed list. The starter in the submitted 1.5.12 update uses GPT-6.1 Sol; older Sol keys keep GPT-6 Sol until you edit them. DEFAULT means the task uses the model's default reasoning effort.

Indicators in the submitted update

Version 1.5.12 is pending Marketplace review as of October 7, 2026. Its Model keys show larger, centered generation and model names without the repeated MODEL heading or idle APPLY footer. Fast uses a lightning symbol with ON/OFF states. Effort keys show larger stage names and step bars; an additional step appears when Ultra is available.

The Current window task key shows the last verified model, effort and Fast after a read or settings change. READ HH:MM marks a recent read. After five seconds it dims to LAST HH:MM, which is a historical snapshot, not confirmation of current settings. Press the task key again to refresh. Failed reads, task navigation and plugin restart clear the summary.

Current window does not respond

Check Stream Deck's Accessibility permission. Bring the intended Codex task window to the front and press the key again. Keep Codex's Copy deeplink shortcut set to Command-Option-L. Remote tasks must already be reachable in Codex. The plugin stops if the captured task changes before settings are applied.

The submitted 1.5.12 update includes fixes for the Marketplace Current window helper and current Codex Desktop CLI discovery. If the helper or CLI is unavailable, check Marketplace for the version available to install. Reinstalling an affected older package may not resolve it. While waiting for approval, Selected on Deck or a fixed local task can avoid the window helper, but still require a working Codex CLI.

Current-window settings inputs can wait in order: QUEUED marks retained inputs. Up to eight can wait for ten seconds; task switches, clipboard capture, navigation or a full queue may stop an input.

The key says SELECT TASK

Open the button settings in Stream Deck. Under Select a task for the Deck, select a recent local task and click Select and open. The last manually selected task is restored after the plugin restarts.

A task does not open or settings do not apply

Keep Codex Desktop running. Select and open the intended task again from the button settings, and refresh the task list if needed. Read the error in the settings panel. If a model or effort is unavailable, refresh the list and choose one supported by your signed-in account; presets do not grant access.

Privacy and clipboard

Current window mode briefly uses the clipboard to copy the task link and restores supported prior contents when no intervening clipboard change is detected. Clipboard-history apps may retain the temporary link. Read the current published privacy policy.

Do not send task conversations, task links, credentials, or personal information. We receive your email address, message, and any attachments through Gmail to respond; website privacy information explains email handling.
